Often, entrepreneurs who seek funding from microfinance institutions (MFIs) lack not only financial resources, but business resources, too. Consequently, unlike banks, many MFIs offer complementary Business Development Services (BDS).

BDS is a term that includes a wide range of advice services, including bookkeeping registering a business, understanding regulations and sales and marketing, to name just a few. There are at least three different kinds of activities under the umbrella term BDS: client development services, entrepreneur development services and business development services.
