
Entrepreneurship is a key policy area for the European Commission. According to the EC, European SMEs are a key to deliver stronger growth and more and better jobs – the two main objectives of the Lisbon Strategy.
SME make up a large part of Europe’s economy: there are some 23 million SMEs in the EU, providing around 75 million jobs and accounting for 99% of all enterprises. Microenterprises themselves account for 91% of all enterprises in the EU. As far as self-employment is concerned, it accounted for 15.9% of total employment in 2009.
