Arto and Susanna Maaranen founded
Oy Aurinkolehto Ltd in 1996. They started their business from their estate in Tohmajärvi in North Karelia as a translation agency. Besides translation services they marketed artic bramble and cloudberry jellies packed in specially designed soapstone jars as business gifts. Since the beginning of their business they have developed a system for the collection and production of birch sap, with the help of
Finnvera´s finance facilities. Today their main article is certified organic Koivu (TM) birch sap.
Oy Aurinkolehto Ltd was awarded the
INNOFINLAND prize by the President of Finland Tarja Halonen in November 2002 for its innovative, unique, high technology process for industrial scale production of birch sap. In the same year the business couple Susanna and Arto Maaranen were given the Outstanding Young Farmers of Finland -prize. The prize was awarded by the Junior Chamber of Finland.
