Besa Fund j.s.cstarted its activity in February 1994, as a urban microcredit project, within the framework of the Albanian Development Fund, with the mission to foster economic growth and reduce poverty by promoting micro- and small enterprises in urban and semi-urban areas. In May 1999, the Besa Foundation was created with the support of the SOROS Foundation. The Besa Foundation inherited the activity and staff of the urban credit department. On 26 December 2008, Besa Fund obtained a licence from the Bank of Albania to operate as a Non-Bank Financial Institution. On 1 January 2009, the activity of Besa Fund was transferred to Besa Fund j.s.c.

 
Clients of Besa Fund j.s.c include people from all socio-economic strata, including the unemployed and start-up businesses. The activity of Besa Fund j.s.c is focused on providing all kinds of lending, including investment loans, loans for working capital, consumer loans, youth loans, mortgage loans, etc. Besides credit, it provides technical assistance for entrepreneurs including training and studies. Besa Fund j.s.c operates from 44 offices covering 80% of Albanian urban and semi-urban areas.
 
Types of loans provided by Besa Fund j.s.c: Business Loans; Business Loans in local currency (ALL); Business Loans in foreign currency (Euro); Consumer loans in local currency; Youth Loans in local currency.
 
Main achievements
Over the years, Besa Fund j.s.chas achieved excellent results by improving its financial indicators and outreach. The year 2009 will be remembered as a challenging year not only because of the difficulties that we faced, but also because it was the first year during which Besa Fund j.s.c operated under the new status as a joint stock company. This status makes Besa Fund j.s.c more visionary and competitive in the financial markets.
 
During 2009, Besa Fund j.s.c disbursed 10,105 loans for a total amount of US$ 33.5 million (€26.7 million), resulting in an increase of 16.29% in disbursed loans compared to 2008. The number of active clients reached 14,909 with a loan portfolio of US$ 42.6 million (€33.9 million) and a PAR of 1.19%. The loan portfolio for the year 2009 increased by 14% compared to 2008. As at the end of December 2009, Besa Fund j.s.chad provided about 56,042 loans in total with a cumulative amount of about US$ 236 million (€188 million).
 
Socio-economic impact
The objective of Besa Fund j.s.c is to remain one of the main actors in Albanian microfinance and to continue to play an important role in the financial support of small and medium-sized private enterprises in Albania, which are considered as the engine of the country’s economic growth. 
 
Besa Fund j.s.cbelieves that its activity has a significant impact in: contributing to self-employment and the creation of new jobs; giving young people a chance to be integrated into society through the possibility of being self-employed. Besa Fund j.s.cis aware that youth employment is important for social development, both through poverty alleviation and social integration, and we strongly believe that investment in youth reaps benefits for individuals, the community and society as a whole; it also improves clients’ living standard due to the increase in family income.
