Opportunity Microcredit Romania (OMRO) is part of Opportunity International Network, an international microfinance institution whose activity consists of providing opportunities for people in need, without racial, ethnic or religious discrimination.
OMRO’s purpose is to support SME development in the central part of the country by providing loans that allow people to sustain their businesses, make a profit and generate employment. OMRO’s portfolio consists of clients, individuals and authorized persons, whose activities are in production, commerce, services or agriculture. Opportunity Microcredit Romania, one of the first microfinance institutions in Romania, was founded as such in 2000.
Opportunity Microcredit Romania started in 1994 when the Izvor Foundation, a non-profit organization, was founded. Under this form, a new means of financing was implemented through loans. Its mission was to help small contractors develop their businesses and thereby create new jobs. Microfinance, being a solution in the developing economic environment, soon found its place in the market due to the “small contractor” and his “small business” in need of development and financial resources.
Given this context, this new institution went through several changes in trying to find new legal and suitable means for granting loans, since providing credit is exclusively a banking operation. Because of legal requirements, both the structure and the name of the institution were changed over time: Banca Populara Izvor in the year 1995, S.C. Opportunity Microcredit Romania in 2000 and Opportunity Microcredit Romania IFN S.A. in 2006.
The mission that OMRO has taken up is to support start-up companies and the development of small and micro-sized companies by facilitating their access to loans. OMRO grants loans for projects that are in the manufacturing, service, commerce or agricultural sectors. Loans are granted to registered persons (individual entrepreneurs, professionals), family businesses and LTDs that measure up to the following requirements:
- Their business is set up in the central part of the country, in Transylvania
- They must have a good reputation at the local level
- Their business should have good potential for development
